In February 2010, Pedro Ruiz created “The Windows Project” — a groundbreaking endeavor celebrating and developing the exquisite art of dance as a cultural bridge between the U.S. and Cuba. After 26 years, Ruiz returned to his native Cuba to teach a master class to the dancers of Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, the nation’s leading contemporary dance company, which was a sweeping success. In January 2011, Ruiz returned to Havana to create an original work for the company that premiered on January 28, 2011, at Teatro Mella in Havana. This was the first time that a Cuban-American had been invited to set a work on a Cuban national dance company. WNET/13 is currently making a film documenting this experience, which will air later this year. Following the premiere in Cuba, and for the first time in over 50 years, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba performed Ruiz’s new piece in the United States during a U.S. tour including a two-week run at the Joyce Theater, New York City, in May 2011.
